Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are studying a master’s or doctorate may get ABSTUDY payments. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and apprentices in lawful custody, such as a remand centre, may get ABSTUDY payments.

How long does it take to get abstudy?
If you don’t have a waiting period, you’ll get your first payment within 2 weeks, if your claim is successful. You can expect to hear from us within 42 days of submitting your claim. We’ll give you an estimated completion date when you submit your claim online. We often process claims before the date we estimate.

You must have worked an average of 30 hours a week for at least 18 months within any 2 year period. This doesn’t have to be 18 months in a row, or at the same job. If you didn’t always work 30 hours a week, you can average your work hours. You can do this over a period of up to 13 weeks.

Do you have to pay back Austudy?
Use the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app or your Centrelink online account through myGov to tell us about changes. If you don’t tell us, it may affect your payment. You may need to pay back money we’ve paid you. If you’re dishonest in order to get a payment, you are committing welfare fraud.
